the effects of intensive language therapy in aphasic patients

چکیده

background & purpose: a stroke occurs when blood flow to a region of the brain is interrupted by the blockage or rupturing of a blood vessel or artery. the most prevalent cause of aphasia is stroke. a brain damage that can effect on receptive & expressive language skills is aphasia. intensive language therapy is the most effective means of treating aphasia. the ciat is one of the novel intensive approaches for aphasia therapy. the goal of this study was to confirm the impact of intense therapy using the ci paradigm in patients with chronic aphasia.   methods:   a single-subject a-b design was used. two chronic aphasia participants with a single left hemisphere cerebrovascular lesion were recruited for the study. participants received ciat 30 hours per four weeks. outcome measure in this study was mississippi aphasia screening test .   results: both participants demonstrated an improvement in expressive, receptive and total index of mast. for the first patient, the score mean in receptive index increased from 24.33 to 31.75. his expressive index was 9 at the baseline evaluation which was increased to 20.5 after receiving treatment. consequently, his total index score was improved significantly from 33.33 to 52.25. the score mean in receptive index for second patient was 29 at the baseline evaluation which was increased to 34 after intensive therapy and expressive index from 22.33 to 32. her total index shift score improved from 51.33 to 66.   conclusion: the results indicate that the intensive language therapy with ciat protocol may be useful in chronic aphasic patients.
